Micro Essays
The quiet power of micro-prose.
What is a micro-essay?
A micro-essay is a form of micro-prose, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like:
A tiny snippet of words.
How tiny? You decide. It’s not strict like a haiku or iambic pentamer. But there is a general consensus that a micro-essay is usually under 300 words.
So, how micro is micro?
You decide. The are no strict rules as with a haiku or iambic pentamer. But there is a general consensus that a micro-essay is usually under 300 words.
For me this usually looks like a single “chunky paragraph.” Technical term, But other micro-writers will break 300 words into seperate paragraphs like a more traditional (albeit short) essay.
What to write about?
I know this sounds like a cop-out, but write about whatever you want.
Mini memoir pieces are common.
I personally write a lot of reflections about things I’ve learned in my life, but styled more as quick notes to other people.
I also love doing self-interviews as writing practice for developing my voice, and just sharing a bit of my world with the internet; it’s also the easiest way to develop your writing skills, because it’s literally just answering questions about yourself!
Lastly, micro-prose is a great way to distill your own knowledge or offer your own perspective on ideas that already exist. I do this in my miscellany and astrology sections.
